The best Apple laptop we’ve tested is the Apple MacBook Pro 14 (2021). It’s the smaller of the two ‘Pro’ laptops with Apple’s new design and an M1 Pro or M1 Max SoC. Don’t worry; you can hide the notch if it bothers you! Its Mini LED screen displays deep blacks, gets incredibly bright, and covers the entire DCI P3 color space, making it suitable for viewing and producing HDR content. Plus, its factory calibration is superb, and it supports ProMotion, meaning it can dynamically adjust the refresh rate up to 120Hz to make motion smoother or lower it to extend battery life. Unlike the MacBook Air, it has an outstanding port selection that includes three USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI, a full-size SD card reader, and a high-output headphone jack for difficult-to-drive cans.

Performance-wise, Apple’s M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs have more than enough processing power to handle demanding tasks like video editing and 3D animation. You can get up to 64GB of memory and 8TB of storage; however, they aren’t user-replaceable, so it’s best to get enough to suit your needs upfront. The battery lasts around 12 to 13 hours of light use, although it’s much shorter if you perform intensive tasks.

2. Apple MacBook Air 13 (M1, 2020)

If you only perform light tasks like text formatting, web browsing, and video playback, get the Apple MacBook Air 13 (M1, 2020), Apple’s entry-level laptop. It’s a very portable 13-inch device with a battery that lasts easily through a typical day of light use. It has a sharp and bright display, a comfortable keyboard, and a large and responsive haptic touchpad, arguably one of the best on the market. Its in-house M1 SoC (System on Chip) can handle everyday tasks with ease, and it does so without fans for cooling, so you don’t need to worry about loud fan noise in a quiet classroom or office. There’s a fingerprint sensor built into the power button, allowing you to log in quickly or authorize purchases in the Apple App Store. Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks, as it only has two USB-C ports and only supports one external display.

At this time, Apple has already released the M2 MacBook Air, which has a new design with thinner bezels, a better 1080p webcam, and a more powerful M2 SoC. However, Apple still sells the M1 MacBook Air as a cheaper option, so it’s up to you whether the design changes and improvements on the newer model are worth the price increase.
