1. Roborock S7 MaxV

The Roborock S7 MaxV is the best robot vacuum we’ve tested. This high-end robot vacuum has a dual-sensor navigation system, which uses LIDAR in conjunction with a pair of cameras with 3D scanning capability to identify and avoid common hazards like power cords, furniture legs, or even pet waste in real-time. You can also use it to monitor things at home while you’re away by looking through the camera. It can also identify the type of room it’s in based on the furniture and automatically suggest different cleaning modes for distinct areas, like bedrooms, kitchens, or bathrooms. It performs remarkably well on bare floors and does an okay job cleaning carpets, though it might need to make an extra pass to fully clean finer debris.

While this vacuum is fully compatible with Roborock’s Empty Wash Fill dock, which further helps reduce hands-on maintenance needs by automatically emptying its dustbin, refilling its water reservoir, and washing its mopping pads, it’s a pretty expensive additional accessory. It also does a terrible job of sealing fine allergens, even though it has an onboard HEPA filter.

Pros

  • Fully compatible with self-cleaning and self-emptying base stations out-of-the-box.
  • Mopping feature is great for dealing with stains.
  • Wide array of cleaning configuration options.

Cons

  • Quite a few parts need regular cleaning when used as a standalone vacuum.
  • Incurs high recurring costs.

2. Ecovacs DEEBOT OZMO T8 AIVI

The best upper mid-range robot vacuum we’ve tested is the Ecovacs DEEBOT OZMO T8 AIVI. It has an advanced dual-sensor navigation system, which combines onboard cameras to identify hazards in real-time with LIDAR to precisely map out its coverage area, similar to the system found on the Roborock S7 MaxV. It generates a permanent map of its coverage area, which you can access via its companion app to set up virtual boundary lines it won’t cross, direct it to a specific area, or schedule cleaning sessions for individual rooms. It is compatible with a self-emptying station to reduce hands-on maintenance needs, though buying the vacuum with this dock is quite pricey. Debris pickup performance on most surfaces is also quite strong. While it has a mopping module, it’s entirely passive, unlike the pricier Roborock’s ultrasonic system, and isn’t nearly as effective when scrubbing away stains.

If that stain-clearing capability is important to you, it’s hard to go wrong with the basic Roborock S7. It features the same ultrasonic mopping system as the flagship Roborock S7 MaxV to scrub away dried-on stains. That said, unlike the more powerful S7 MaxV or Ecovacs, it uses only a LIDAR sensor to navigate and has no cameras that allow it to see and avoid low-lying hazards in real time.

Pros

  • Automatically recognizes and avoids obstacles
  • Exceptional battery life
  • Allows for remote home monitoring with built-in camera
  • Supports virtual boundaries
  • Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice support

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Mops with water, not cleaning solution
  • Moderate learning curve
  • Auto-Empty Station is sold separately

3. Roborock S5 Max

The Roborock S5 Max is a great choice if you’re looking for a versatile robot vacuum at a mid-range price. While you’re missing out on the Roborock S7 MaxV’s real-time hazard identification capability and mopping capability, this relatively affordable vacuum offers good value for money. It has a LIDAR mapping system, which is rare for a vacuum at this price point, and allows for quick and precise room mapping compared to most optical sensor-based systems. Its companion app is very easy to use and lets you set up virtual boundary lines that it won’t cross or direct it to clean a specific room in your home. It delivers exceptional performance on flat, even surfaces like hardwood or tile floors and is remarkably effective when dealing with pet hair on a wide variety of surfaces.

Unfortunately, while this vacuum’s ‘Carpet Mode’ feature lets it automatically ramp up its suction power on carpeting, it still struggles with cleaning fine and large debris embedded in carpet fibers. Looking for something slightly cheaper? The Wyze Robot Vacuum is worth a look. It features LIDAR navigation at a lower purchase price than the Roborock, though it has a smaller dirt compartment and a shorter battery life.

Pros

  • Exceptional debris pickup performance on bare floors.
  • Fantastic pet hair cleaning performance.
  • Long battery life.
  • Great build quality.

Cons

  • Ineffective mopping feature.
  • Many parts need regular cleaning.
  • High recurring costs.

4. yeedi K650

SEE AT AMAZON

If you’re looking to spend as little as possible on a robot vacuum and don’t want or need many convenience features, the yeedi K650 is a simple, solid option. Its companion app is intuitive, and you can use it to set the vacuum’s power setting and schedule cleaning sessions in advance. Still, compared to midrange models like the Roborock S5 Max, its mapping and navigation systems are very basic, leading it to miss some areas and occasionally bump into obstructions, even its charging dock. It doesn’t store a permanent map of its coverage area, so you can’t direct it to specific rooms in your home or set up virtual boundary lines. However, you can buy magnetic boundary strips to prevent the vacuum from entering certain spaces. It’s compatible with Amazon Alexa devices, allowing you to make inputs with voice commands.

Despite its relatively low price, it still does a fantastic job of cleaning pet hair and small and bulky debris from flat, even surfaces, though it can have a hard time cleaning large and fine debris on carpeted floors. It feels well-built for a vacuum in this price bracket, with a fairly sturdy-feeling body made of matte-finish plastic. Its dirt compartment is also large for a robot vacuum, so you won’t need to empty it too often.

Pros

  • Powerful suction
  • Long battery life

Cons

  • Lacks intelligent mapping and other smart features
  • Doesn’t come with a remote control

5. iRobot Roomba S9

iRobot Roomba S9
iRobot Roomba S9

SEE AT AMAZON

If you suffer from allergies and want a robot vacuum to handle your light-duty cleaning needs, the iRobot Roomba S9 is a solid option. Unlike the comparably-priced Roborock S7 MaxV, this premium robot vacuum has a far simpler optical sensor-based system and can’t recognize and avoid obstacles in real time, though thankfully, you can still set up virtual boundary lines that the vacuum won’t cross or direct it to clean specific areas at specific times. That said, if you don’t want or need these features and want something better at filtering out allergens, it’s worth a look. It has an onboard HEPA filter to trap allergens as it cleans and is effective in trapping particles like pet dander. If you want to further minimize the spread of allergens, it’s fully compatible with a self-emptying dock that can suck debris from its internal dustbin into an external dirtbag without manual intervention.

However, buying this accessory separately or purchasing it with the vacuum as part of the S9+ bundle does push it into a different price bracket. If you don’t mind giving up the onboard HEPA filter, the yeedi vac station offers self-emptying capability at a much lower purchase price. The yeedi also has a passive mopping system, which isn’t especially effective in clearing stains but is still a feature that the iRobot lacks.

Pros

  • Excellent build quality.
  • Fantastic battery performance.
  • Amazing maneuverability.
  • Clears debris effectively on bare floors.
  • Strong overall performance on bare floors.

Cons

  • High recurring costs.
  • No hazard detection system
  • Poor crack-cleaning capability.
  • No mopping function.
