The best AirPrint printer we’ve tested is the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw. This bulky but sturdy laser all-in-one has nearly all the features you need for your office. Its ADF-equipped scanner processes a whopping 25 pages per minute, supports formats up to 8.5″ x 14″, and scans double-sided documents in a single pass. It prints very quickly at 21 black or 29 color pages per minute and doesn’t take long to warm up. The toner cartridges yield roughly 2400 black and 2100 color prints, so you won’t need to replace them often unless you regularly print in bulk. The cartridges are expensive, but that’s because they contain the drum, which means you won’t have to spend extra to replace it separately. Color accuracy is okay, but like most laser printers, it isn’t ideal for photo printing.

If you regularly print graphics or photos at the office, it’s best to go with an inkjet model. We recommend the Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850, an all-in-one printer with a refillable ink tank. It yields nearly 5000 black pages or 2500 color pages, and the ink bottles are fairly inexpensive, resulting in a low cost per print. It prints up to 25 black or color pages per minute and can perform automatic double-sided printing. Printed photos look detailed and vibrant, albeit not very color-accurate. The downsides are that it’s more expensive, and inkjet printers require a little more maintenance as the printheads can clog after extended use.

Pros

  • Small footprint for all that it does
  • Strong cross-platform integration with HP Smart App
  • Single-pass auto-duplexing ADF
  • Staunch security
  • Expandable

Cons

  • Somewhat high running costs

If you only print in black and white, you can save some money with a more modest mid-range monochrome printer, the Canon imageCLASS MF445dw. It prints quickly at 21 pages per minute, yields around 4000 pages from a single toner cartridge, and supports Apple AirPrint. You can further increase the page yield with high-yield cartridges, and it accepts third-party toner. The cartridge is on the expensive side, but the upside is that you won’t have to replace the drum separately because it’s in the cartridge. The scanner processes up to 41 pages per minute through the feeder, scans double-sided documents in a single pass, and includes an optical character recognition feature that lets you scan documents into text files for quick keyword searches.

This model is currently hard to find. If you have trouble finding one, we suggest getting the newer Canon imageCLASS MF455dw, which we haven’t tested but expect to perform similarly and has better availability.

Pros

  • Expandable paper capacity, with two input sources
  • Speedy output
  • Relatively compact
  • Single-pass ADF
  • Large, customizable touch control panel

Cons

  • Photo output quality could be better

3. Brother MFC-J4335DW

For our budget pick, we chose the Brother MFC-J4335DW. This all-in-one inkjet model feels very well built despite its price and packs tons of features to satisfy most household needs. With AirPrint support, you can connect to the printer easily and start printing right away, saving you precious time. Its printing speed is great, churning out 17 black or 15 color pages per minute, and it can print double-sided automatically. The ink cartridges are good for around 2200 black and 800 color prints, and you can get high-yield cartridges that’ll last even longer.

The only downsides are that it doesn’t support duplex scanning or print particularly good photos as they come out looking grainy and washed out. If those things don’t matter to you, then the MFC-J4335DW is a great option.

Pros

  • Duplex printing
  • Fast print speed for the price
  • Fax function
  • Prints from and scans to mobile devices
  • Low price plus low cost per page

Cons

  • ADF does not support duplex scanning
  • Text quality is poor at small font sizes and with some stylized fonts

4. Canon PIXMA MG3620

If you need something cheap for the occasional one-off project, we recommend the Canon PIXMA MG3620. It doesn’t feel particularly sturdy and lacks an automatic feeder, but it produces good-quality documents and photos. The main drawback with a cheap model like this is its low page yield. Its two-cartridge system yields only around 200 black and color prints, meaning you’ll have to replace the cartridges often. They aren’t expensive, but the cost will still add up quickly if you print a lot, which is why it’s only a good option if you only print once in a while and need something that can get the job done.

Pros

  • Great cost-per-print.
  • Good photo printing quality and color accuracy.

Cons

  • Few connectivity options.
  • Slow printing speed.

5. Canon PIXMA TR8620

The best photo printer with AirPrint we’ve tested is the Canon PIXMA TR8620. This all-in-one inkjet model prints amazing photos that look detailed and vibrant, with no signs of banding. Its color accuracy is decent; good enough for casual use but not quite for professional-level photo printing. It prints reasonably fast, and it supports 4″ x 6″, 5″ x 7″, and 8″ x 10″ photo paper. The ink cartridges don’t last very long; however, they’re fairly cheap, so the cost-per-print remains low even if you replace them often.

The only thing that’s a little disappointing with the PIXMA TR8620 is that while it has a scanner with a high scan resolution and color depth, the scan quality is just okay, so it’s not the best for digitizing photos.

Pros

  • Outstanding connectivity options.
  • Has an automatic document feeder.

Cons

  • Takes a bit long to print the first page.
  • Prints slowly.
  • Poor black page yield.
  • No duplex scanning.
